From yesterday, Telegram users who happened to use Whatsapp as well noticed something weird. The Facebook owned chat app has blocked any links to its rival chat app Telegram.me. In Whatsapp, the users could post the URLs but it didn’t appear as hyperlinked. So the users could not click or copy the messages. Though only some of the users faced that problem, it was viral as it blocked both usernames and links to individual messages or chat rooms.
Telegram confirmed this activity to The Verge. They have already begun with a silent update (2.12.367) which hasn’t reached every devices using Whatsapp. From the testing it was also revealed that the block includes even an unrelated URL named Telegram.com.
Blocking links aren’t new for Facebook which owns Whatsapp. Previously it was criticized for blocking Pirate Bay links in 2010. And recently, it again gained criticism for blocking mentions of potential rival Tsu.co. However, blocking Telegram.me is the first major link block users faced from Whatsapp.
One of the spokesperson from Telegram told The Verge that as usual Facebook may try to blame its intelligent filtering after this counterblast. “We expect the same to happen this time as well.”
