After a long time, the Chinese government has blocked its citizens from accessing Wikipedia. Not all the versions have been closed though, for the time being it blocked only the Chines version.
The Pixels Tech believes that the changing of Wikipedia default protocol from HTTP to HTTPS, made the government block it, because it has made it more difficult for China’s GFW (Great FireWall) to filter specific pages and information. This is one of the prime reasons that the Chines government is determined to block the integral site.
On the other hand, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has spoken out a tiny bit of complexity about filtering out pages. “They are no longer able to filter out certain pages. So they have a choice of all of Wikipedia or none… So it is a little bit tougher diplomacy than what I have had to do in the past.” Jimmy said, at the Leadership Energy Summit Asia 2015.
It was the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests when the Chines government had blocked Wikipedia for the first time. In the month of June, 2004. The block didn’t last that long though, after only 19 days the government unblocked Wikipedia, but no sooner had it passed through a few months that the Chines government blocked it again at the month of September in the same year. The following year, at the month of October, Wikipedia was blocked by the Chines government. After then, it was unblocked for the next few years just for a number of specific articles.
