The recent tide of intolerance caused by Donald Trump has raised many eyebrows regarding his racist comments towards the Muslims. Google CEO finally opened up saying that we should be more respectful to others’ values and that fear should not defeat our values. In a Medium essay, he responded to recent waves of prejudice against Muslims by reiterating his own hopeful narrative of emigration from India to the US and the idea that his company is strengthened by diversity.
Major Silicon Valley executives started a chorus and Pichai joins them against intolerance. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO also agreed to the point that Facebook would fight to protect the rights of Muslims and work to create a peaceful and safe environment on Wednesday. On Monday, Google ‘s Eric Schmidt echoed with the same statement , when he called on leaders in government and the technology industry to use their power to fight broadly for human progress and tolerance.
In Pichai’s words, ‘ It’s been said a million times that America is the ‘land of opportunity’ — for millions of immigrants, it’s not an abstract notion, but a concrete description of what we find here.’
Though Pichai’s words echo the solidarity of the US as a nation, his company and its competitors still have a lot of work to do within their own companies to further the cause of diversity and inclusion. Among the members of the Silicon Valley, Immigration is a particular concern – something intolerant government policies would work against.
Another concerning fact is that whether people are giving to more importance to the debate which should not be a matter of even question. But people who are not Muslims and are under no attack should come forward and protest. That the US would take step to resolve much intolerance is a known fact. But the American citizens need to take a stand as there is a number of Muslims living as immigrants in the country an contributing to the overall growth of the country.
