Your drones need to last longer if you want to use them for delivery rather than just to play for some minutes. A company called Intelligent Energy announced today it has developed a hydrogen fuel cell powered range extender which can make that happen, and give your drone the power to fly for several hours instead of just a few minutes.
This new fuel cell extender is supposed to be extremely lightweight that will help the drones to fly as usual with one tied to their bodies. Since the unmanned aerial vehicles no longer have to be recharged in the traditional way, it can obviously shorten the hour long wait in between flights to just two minutes.
“Drones are one of the most exciting new technologies. Even with advanced batteries their value is limited. For commercial use, they need to offer better flight times and range,” said Julian Hughes, group business development director and acting managing director for Intelligent Energy’s consumer electronics division. “That will all become possible with the release of our range extender platform. A longer flight time coupled with a quick re-fuel opens a wide range of new commercial possibilities for businesses such as drones for inspection of offshore platforms, search and rescue, high quality aerial photography, precision agriculture and parcel delivery and more. Given we also have the ability to tailor solutions to customer requirements, this could completely revolutionize the potential of drone technology.”
The price of this hybrid fuel cell drone range extender hasn’t been fixed yet and it’s still a prototype. The company is going to unveil this prototype at a special Intelligent Energy Embedded World event at CES 2016 in Las Vegas. Keep your eyes on this event to know more about the drones.
