Tesla has not only introduced the ability to summon your car from its parking lot, it has a much bigger plan to execute. Elon Musk, the head of Tesla, is predicting that the new feature will push its Model S car to cross boundaries of countries within 2018.
The company’s automatic chargers would keep the EV running on lengthy journeys. For example, if you wish to enjoy a ride in your electronic car in Chicago from Washington DC, you can ask for it to come to the town you are currently staying.
That is certainly an ambitious claim. Unfortunately, there’s a good chance that political realities will prevent Tesla from fulfilling its dreams so quickly. Only a handful of US states currently allow self-driving cars in any form, let alone vehicles whose owners aren’t in the same state. And, autonomous driving is a lot more daunting when the machine has to travel across a whole country.
Musk said on a conference call that cars would need a “lot of redundancy” to make sure they don’t need human involvement in mid-trip. The groundwork should exist. It might not take that much longer before your car can always catch up with you.
It will not be so surprising to explore the ambitious project of Elon Musk. From the beginning his madness with self-driving cars has led us to believe that soon it may cross the boundaries of a country. Perhaps we just have to wait till 2018 to see the results only if we can afford to have a Tesla Model S in our garage.
