If you have ever typed, “how to save batteries to my smartphone” you must have come across thousands of methods available for your adoption in order to overcome this problem. Even though the concept of Wi-Fi internet access has gained massive popularity, especially among smartphone users, it still drains a lot of juice out of the smartphone batteries.
Engineers have found a method that will tremendously boost the signal of your Wi-Fi, at least, 10,000 times while remaining 1000 times more energy efficient, calling it Passive Wi-Fi which will soon become a necessity in our lives.
“We wanted to see if we could achieve Wi-Fi transmissions using almost no power at all”
According to Shyam Gollakota of the University of Washington,
“That’s basically what Passive Wi-Fi delivers. We can get Wi-Fi for 10,000 times less power than the best thing that’s out there.”
The team discovered this low energy consuming device after they dissected its digital and analogue features embedded in its transmitting device. With the passage of time, engineers have figured out innovative means to efficiently use radio signals however completely ignoring the presence of its analogue signal that eats away excessive amount of those precious energies.
The entire principle of Passive Wi-Fi is that it has the ability to select specific radio waves towards it and simultaneously build its own signal out of the received signals by absorbing all its redundant energy emitted from its signal.
“First, a single device plugged into a wall – this part uses most of the power in this whole process – sends analogue waves to special passive wi-fi sensors. These sensors require practically no energy to run.
They then pick up those waves, reflecting them with a digital switch, which creates what the team calls ‘Wi-Fi packets’. Those beam low-energy Internet at bit rates of up to 11 megabits per second to devices like phones, routers, and more.”
A statement collected from Bryan Lufkin from Gizmodo, ScienceAlert.
Till now, the underlying concept of Passive Wi-Fi has successfully managed to sustain the expectations of its makers by connecting with various Wi-Fi hub spots each carefully placed 30 meters away as its radio waves gently flow through the walls.
According to the MIT Technology Review, the Passive Wi-Fi has already earned its spot as one of the revolutionary technologies of this year, costing only less than a dollar for building it! This technology is going save your smartphone from losing its juice whenever you may need it the most. Do you know “how to save your smartphone?”
