Do you have a friend or relative who is suffering from Dyslexia? It’s a reading disorder that affects reading, writing, spelling, and even speaking. It’s a common condition as one in five people suffers from it, even famous actor Tom Cruise is also a dyslexic. However, to most of us it’s not widely understood, even if they told you how they’re struggling while reading you can’t understand unless you witness it firsthand.
Well, there is a man named Victor Widell who wants you to understand how reading with dyslexia might feel. With a bit of JavaScript and based on his dyslexic friend’s description, this developer has made a web-based simulation of dyslexic reading at his blog Geon.
If you go through the simulation you will have an approximate idea how it feels like reading with dyslexia. You have to put more concentration as letters are constantly jumping around. The source code is available, giving you the chance to implement it on other websites or apps.
Here’s what the text says if you had a hard time reading while going through the simulation:
“A friend who has dyslexia described to me how she experiences reading. She can read, but it takes a lot of concentration, and the letters seems to “jump around”.”
However, the simulation is not accurate. There are many forms of dyslexia and not everyone is diagnosed with the same reading experience. Some nonexistent movement and letters seeing like “d”, “b” is quite common with dyslexia. Still, it’s a good way to introduce people to dyslexia and help educators and on how to deal with dyslexic people.
