Gender inequalities are everywhere, even in the workplace. And Google wants to do something about that. So a handful of employees from the search engine giant have developed a set of emoji designed to better represent women in the professional world. The team submitted the proposal this Tuesday to the Unicode Consortium, the body that oversees the creation of new emoji.
The team proposed at least 13 new emojis, including doctors, scientists, businesspeople, and even a rock star. They believe that the new emojis depict “a wide range of professions for women and men, with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women’s careers and empowering girls everywhere.”
“We believe we can have a larger positive impact by adding 13 new emoji that depict women across a representative sample of professions,” the Google team writes. “We believe this will empower young women (the heaviest emoji users), and better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world.”
Well, these new emojis are not just the female version of existing male emojis. The proposed emojis will be displayed by combining characters that are already in place. For instance, a female surgeon would be coded as women plus a hospital, while a male farmer would be male plus tractor. The professional fields for the new emojis comprise science, education, technology, business, healthcare, industry, farming, food service, and music.
The future of these professional emojis for women is quite uncertain as the proposal in its earliest stage. However, the team wants to get these emojis standardized by the end of this year. And there is a possibility that it will be standardized as this one is high profile among other emoji proposals, with backing from Mark Davis, co-founder, and president of the Unicode Consortium.
