Withings, the manufacturer of healthcare products and wearables which were acquired by Nokia earlier this year, has presented the Withings Steel HR at the IFA in Berlin. The Steel HR is a special smart watch that combines an analog dial with a small screen for notifications and information.
Withings has been in the big news since it was announced in April this year that the company would be acquired by Nokia. The acquisition has been completed in June and yesterday the company launched a special new smartwatch Steel HR under the banner of Nokia at the IFA in Berlin.
The Withings Steel HR looks like a normal watch with an analog dial. The ingenuity, however, lies in a small round LCD screen behind the dial above the analog clock.
Recording heart rate, activity and sleep patterns
On this small screen, the Withings Steel HR is able to display various types of information, alerts, and notifications. The smartwatch is equipped with a heart rate sensor at the rear, and can thus record the heart rate in all circumstances.
Furthermore, the Steel HR is able to count steps and record distance traversed while walking, running or even swimming. In addition, the watch also calculates the number of calories burned. At night, the Withings Steel HR records the sleep rhythm and the user can be subtly awakened by a silent vibrating alarm.
Special smartphone app
To properly use the Withings Steel HR, the Withings Health Mate app must be installed on the connected smartphone. This app is available for both iOS and Android smartphones. When the smartwatch is connected to a smartphone, it is also able to notify, for example, incoming messages or phone calls via a display on the small screen and a vibration on the wrist.
Endurance of 25 days
Unlike most smartwatches the Withings Steel HR has an endurance of up to 25 days thanks to its analog clock and a very small LCD screen. Most smart watches should present every day or every charge the day. The Withings Steel HR can be charged on a magnetic charging path that ensures that the Withings Steel HR makes good contact with the charger.
Pricing and Availability
The Withings Steel HR is available in two sizes: a small watch with a diameter of 36 mm and a slightly larger watch with a diameter of 40 mm. The small watch has 18 mm wide watch straps; the larger watch uses watch straps of 20mm wide. Watch straps are interchangeable and all the usual watch straps in the market can be used on the Withings Steel HR. The small size of Steel HR will cost 170 euros, and the larger size will be a tenner more expensive. Both versions will come in mid-October on the market.
