I always considered USB as a means of exchanging data, until last night I came to know that the researchers at the University of Ben-Gurion have managed to transform it into a remote data stealer. And this happens only when a computer gets affected by a malware named “USBee.”
Created by Israeli researchers
This latest malicious idea has been proposed by the NSA cyber-weapons who also urged these Israeli researchers to create the malware USBee a.k.a COTTONMOUTH.
The idea was present in the NSA hacking tools catalog revealed by Edward Snowden in DerSpiegel.
However, the whole concept of USBee is remarkably advanced and sophisticated than COTTONMOUTH. Firstly, it does not require an NSA agent to make it function; and secondly, it’s wireless!
Functions with any USB
The whole outlook of it is ordinary and manages to spread itself like any other malware. It can function with any USB connector, which you may choose to connect. Furthermore, the connector can be a dongle, a portable hard disk drive or a cable bridging your computer with a storage disk located nearby.
This data stealer operates by transmitting hidden commands to the attacker’s data bus, and with the help of electromagnetic signals, the commands get processed. In addition, the Israeli researchers have designed this device in a specific manner, allowing it to transmit waves of different frequencies maintaining a binary of 0 and 1.
Why create this?
The underlying purpose of this malware is to steal all your personal and valuable data segregates them into binary before sending them off to the attacker’s receiving end.
If you think I have missed any important feature, feel free to comment as TTN would love to hear from you.
