Sci-Fi TV shows have the ability to go deep into a story and explain all of the complicated tech stuff in depth, where the fans get more time to enjoy their favorite characters and events. Firefly was that kind of a TV series.
A sci-fi set in the West
Firefly was created by Joss Whedon (Avengers 1 & 2) and starred the likes of Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres & Alan Tudyk. It was a mash-up of sci-fi and the western genre. Because of its different take it became immensely successful. The premise was like this
“Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.”
Too expensive to produce
The show quickly became successful and more & more viewers started to tune in. Joss Whedon is a nerd himself and he was fascinated by sci-fi. So the Sci-fi quality of TV series was also top notch. People started quoting character dialogues and space “Serenity” became a household name for the tv show fans. But the viewership could not save the show because it was too expensive to produce. So only after one season this popular TV show was canceled.
Fans were obviously furious but the TV network had no idea how passionate the fans were. Their protest was so intense that a movie named “Serenity” was later made to tie in all the loose end of the story. Till now its still considered one of few successful fan campaigns.
