The more we are technologically moving forward, the more we are getting out of touch with what we eat. We don’t have the time and space at our home to grow vegetables and fruits by our own. And even if someone tries, most of them can’t even remember to water their plants. SproutsIO wants to change that, by creating a complete support system aimed to let you grow fresh vegetables and fruits indoor, all the year-round, without any soil, with the help of an app that learns from your preferences.
Originally developed in 2011, the product is the brainchild of Jennifer Broutin Farah. The team she led worked to produce something that helps anyone roam around their kitchen without even worrying about their vegetables going bad quickly or not being clean enough.
Ditch the soil
As mentioned about ditching the soil, SproutsIO is basically a hybrid hydroculture, which uses hydroponics and aeroponics to take care of the plants. The process starts with the SproutsIO pot itself, which is a modular system designed with amenities in mind. The rest of the product is the basin, where you need to put the water. Also, the basin includes the monitoring system. As there’s no soil, the hydroponics keeps roots in a nutrient-rich water solution, and the aeroponics involves misting them with a similar mixture.
Easy to maintain
With SproutsIO, gardening is quite easier and hassles free as you don’t have to change the soil. Just remove the top layer of it that contains the plant, and pop the basin into a sink to clean. It’s pretty easy to adjust the height of the planter because of the modular nature of the pot. You can even switch between aeroponics and hydroponics modes.
No need to think about how the plants will grow without light. SproutsIO features its own light source, a flexible LED lamp that you can remove whenever you want. The best part is the energy the whole setup consumes is less than a laptop. You can customize the lighting schemes according to your project, from bright white to softer shades of red or blue. It comes with an inbuilt camera that lets you peep on your plants using the compatible SproutsIOGrow app, even if you’re not at home. The app not only helps you to monitor your plants from afar, but also contains information about which condition is better for your plants to grow in, and which condition is suitable to grow juicier tomatoes or greener spinach.
Unlike other IoT solutions, SproutsIO helps you to purchase easily. With the subscription service, you’ll get sIO seed refills, which comprises the seeds, the growing media and the appropriate nutrients, everything you need to get started.
What can I grow?
Now, the question is what you can actually grow. Currently, the project lets you grow Lacinato kale, parsley, basil, cilantro, as much more. It only takes three weeks to grow up those leafy greens. However, it’s not a crime if you try some new, such as root vegetables like potatoes and carrots.
You can pre-order the SproutsIO via Kickstarter for $559. Their crowdfunding campaign has already raised $46,720 of the $100,000 goal, with 24 days remaining. So, what are you waiting for? Order this right now and plan to make some super fresh salads with home grew fresh vegetables.
