Rumor leaked earlier that Lenovo will lay of a notable amount of Motorola employees and it was thought to be in hundreds. Employees were obviously upset and some of them expressed their anger and disappointment on social media. Later is was officially expressed that yes layoffs are going to happen but they tried to put a positive spin on the number and revealed that the actual number of employees who will be sacked is much larger. Lenovo didn’t state the number but new rumors indicate that over a thousand employees will be sacked.
Much worse than was expected
It was assumed that this layoff was somewhere in the ballpark of last year’s round which saw 200 employees losing their jobs. At worst, the darkest guess would be that could be in the realm of the 500-employee cut that took place before that. Addressing the rumors, Lenovo released a statement including the following:
General assumption was that the layoff will be around 200 employees and worst case scenario was thought to be at 500 employees. Lenovo addressed the rumors with this statement.
“Lenovo today announced a resource action impacting less than two percent of its approximately 55,000 employees globally. The majority of the positions being eliminated are part of the ongoing strategic integration between Lenovo and its Motorola smartphone business as the company further aligns its organization and streamlines its product portfolio to best compete in the global smartphone market.”
It’s clear that the layoff will happen from the 1100 employees who were thought to be redundant or cost ineffective after the acquisition by Lenovo and think this is a step towards moving the whole operation to China but denied this acquisition and said that they are fully focused on Chicago office and Motorola HQ will stay there.
What are your thoughts about this massive layoff?
