HIV medicine has mostly been focused on suppression and preventative medicine but some researchers from Britain broke some happy news that they may be inching towards an ultimate cure. As a part of clinical trials a 44-year-old social worker in London seems to be completely free of the virus. It was an aggressive “kick and kill” treatment. First, a vaccine was taken to detect infected cells in his immune system and then “Vorinostat” was taken to activate dormant infected cells which are normally undetectable after that it was just a matter of letting healthy immune system killing HIV-infected viruses, in theory eliminating any chance of getting it back.
Just the beginning
The researchers said that it is only the beginning and there are still years of research ahead to be able to declare this as a cure. This social worker was only the first 50 to finish the trial and now he needs to wait for months in observation so see if the infected cells returns or not. The conventional medicines he was taking could also have helped and if the experiment is successful even the tests will go on for 5 more years.
None the less the treatment is promising and it’s far less complex than other procedures that are available currently. But if it is successful then we can eradicate one of the worst diseases ever.
