Having a robot butler around your house may sound normal, but having a robot toy? It may sound crazy but it’s a fact now. Anki, a San Francisco-based company has created a robot toy named Cozmo, which is powered by company’s artificial intelligence.
Cozmo is a cute robot pal for your kids (or maybe for you) that comes with the wit and spunk of the Eve character of the animated film Wall-E. It’s not just a simple toy, but a smart companion that will get smarter over time. Cozmo is a full package of pleasant personality, with its expressive LED eyes, tiny size and rollicking voice. With the help of its tiny tank treads, it roams around and interacts with the environment with its single tied arm. Below its eyes, there’s a camera that helps it to recognize people and its surroundings.
How to setup
Albeit being a kid-friendly robot, Cozmo needs an adult (who is patient enough) to install it. Initial setup is pretty straightforward but a bit annoying. First, you have to plug it into the charger, install the app, and then connect it using the app. During the setup process, you need to connect to the Cozmo’s Wi-Fi network, typing a lengthy password.
It’s time to play
Once connected, Cozmo wakes up and leaves its charger, starting to explore its surroundings. Just like a cartoon character, it makes a lot of impressions like “awww” or “whoa” that will surely make you like it. It’s completely powered by a mobile app that also plays music when you’re playing with it. You can play games like “Quick Tap” or “Keepaway” with Cozmo, and you’ll surely enjoy frustrating a robot like it.
Powered by artificial intelligence, Cozmo’s brain exists in the cloud, means you always have to hook it up with a smartphone. Lose the connection or close the app and Cozmo is nothing but am an empty vessel. It means, though it’s a child’s toy, your kids won’t be able to play unless you hand over your phone to them.
You can order this cute little robot toy via Anki’s website for $179.99. The price may sound insane for a toy, but with its growing ability, there’s a possibility that Cozmo will sell like crazy during the upcoming holiday season.
