Facebook puts Cisco Systems in an uncomfortable position with an announcement on Tuesday. Because of Facebook’s Wedge 100, a second generation computer network switch is now available. Edgecore, a Chinese contract manufacturer belongs to Accton Technology will lead the sales.
Edgecore also manufactured facebook-designed switch for Facebook.
The super dynamic 100G switch is on demand. Eventually, other big companies will want to buy it.
However, Facebook is not a direct competitor to Cisco which owns 59% of the market as IDC mentions at all. Despite, Facebook is giving away the switch design free of cost which is surprisingly impressive and equally risky for Cisco.
This is all part of Facebook’s Open Computer Project, OCP. Some people say it is one of the most important technology projects of Facebook.
An expert on this subject shared, “OCP has a cult-like following.”The whole industry, internet companies, vendors, and enterprises are monitoring OCP.”
Tech Titans in The OCP
OCP board housed members from Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Intel, and Microsoft. Within six years it went global.
OCP insiders reveal that the team contains even Apple’s networking team. The team built a network at Apple. The network was outstanding that never went down.
This team did not leave Apple if the company allowed them to work on OCP. But, Apple said no to them and on the same week, the whole team quit their job. However, later Apple joined OCP.
