The world famous cosmologist and physicist Stephen Hawkings warned about AI that is slowly becoming more human-like by slowly developing a will of its own. His description about AI is, “powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many”.
“Artificial Intelligence could be the worst thing to happen to humanity if it is not properly managed.”
The Professor had given this chilling warning in Cambridge during the launch of The Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence. The event primarily showed all the aspects related to AI, both positives, and negatives. The AI is already acting as a virtual assistant (Siri and Cortana); there are war droids that will result in zero casualties at wars among humans.
This is not the first warning from Stephen Hawking addressing all the potential threats that AI possesses. It can drive the entire human race to extinction if not used appropriately.
His statements about AI was not entirely pessimistic as he mentioned about,“finally eradicate disease and poverty”.
“In short, success in creating AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization, but it could also be the last unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”
The most disturbing of all warnings was about how it “could develop a will of its own – a will that is in conflict with ours.” There is also a possibility that these machines will try to break free from our control to overpower us.
With all the latest manufacturing robots, the AI will easily turn millions of people jobless by taking over their roles and responsibilities.
The director of CFI Stephen Cave ensured that the goals of humans and AI will always stay coherent; while also emphasized on the computers that will never evolve drastically reaching beyond the limitation set by us.
