Nintendo broke a few hearts of their fans today. Nintendo stated in the popular Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that their new hybrid console will not be able to play 3DS cartridges or Wii U discs. It’s not clear if the Switch will be able to run digital games either. So if you were hoping to play 3DS games on your large screen TV just because you can, well you can’t. That’s a real blow to consumer expectations.
Nintendo also clarified that The Switch is not a successor to either 3DS or Wii U but rather a completely brand new platform so it does not have to support previous systems. Some reporters ask Nintendo if The Switch will replace the 3DS platform and Nintendo replied that they are considering releasing an independent 3DS successor in the future.
This can also be a contingency plan by Nintendo to cover all the bases. The gaming giant is saying the Switch is not a direct 3DS successor, later the company can release one without losing face if the Switch ends up becoming a flop. But it might also be a real news and Nintendo is seriously considering a new standalone handheld console. It will be a massive good news for Nintendo fans.
So what are your thoughts on The Switch?
