Before the event, they installed non-operational tiles on the Desperate Housewives’ homes. And you know what, no one even notices the roof as they looked so normal, meaning Elon Musk and Solar City truly achieved what they want to.
Elon Musk and Solar City have been teasing the solar roof for e few weeks. During this event, Musk explained why it’s important for an automaker company to acquire Solar City. According to him, it would be difficult to launch the new tiles if the merger doesn’t happen.
Musk didn’t reveal any concrete pricing as it’s difficult to put the price for every house. However, he assured that the total cost will be less than a normal roof and the cost of electricity. Instead of the home builders, the company will sell the tiles directly to the customers.
There will be four different versions of solar panels, such as Stale Glass Tile, Textured Glass Tile, Tuscan Glass Tile, and Smooth Glass Tile. Tesla claims those glass tiles are far more durable than the traditional roof tile. “People love their homes and we want them to be better,” Musk said.
As it requires batteries to keep the system on when the sun goes down, the company also introduced a new version of its Powerwall. Tesla said the Powerwall 2 is able to store 14 kWh of energy, with a 5 kW continuous power draw, and 7 kW peak. Musk said it will be able to a house with four bedrooms, including lights, refrigerators and other appliances for a whole day. Also, it comes with a warranty for unlimited power cycles for up to 10 years. The price Powerwall 2 is $5,500.
According to Musk, the solar energy solution comes with three parts: generations (solar panels), storage (batteries), and transportations (electric cars), and all these will be sold through Tesla. They are going to install the solar roof in summer 2017.
