Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer giant sells and delivers almost everything to our doors. Ceaselessly every day more than thousands of Amazon’s drivers are dropping consumer ordered commodities on to their doors making sure that all are delivered on time. But according to the recent BBC report, it seems that the company is not being fair with its employees. Particularly, the delivery drivers have a bundle of complaints about their services.
Illegal hours work: Some of Amazon’s drivers from contracted agencies told that they have to regularly work illegal hours like 11 hours a day for at least 200 parcels, therefore, they break the speed limits of the road as 120/mph to arrive on time to the delivery place. Not only this but the most shocking matter had happened that sometimes drivers had to pee and defecate in the bottle and the bag while they were on duty and this is only because of the tight schedule. It is really insane, isn’t it?
Poor wages: An anonymous driver from AHC services (known as one of many agencies which supply drivers to the firm’s delivery amazon) complained that Amazon paid him £4.76 per hour in his second week when he worked four days, but according to the UK government law the minimum wage for an employee is £6.50 per hour.
Furthermore, Cody Cooper, a former supervisor at AHC said that “I ordered one driver, who fell asleep at the wheel, to stop driving because she feared he could “end up killing someone”, and also added that “It was coming up to school time and there could [have been] a group of schoolchildren walking along… and he could have steered off.”
The interesting thing is that denying all these allegations Amazon told another story in a statement that “As independent contractors of our delivery providers, drivers deliver at their own pace, take breaks at their discretion, and are able to choose the suggestion route or develop their own.”
The company also claims that they pay a minimum of £12 per hour for a driver.
However, it looks very sad that an employee works hard but doesn’t get paid well but we hope that Amazon will be fair about its employees as much as its concerned about its clients.
