There are a lot of fake news sites on Facebook to simply generate revenues and it was becoming a problem so Facebook followed Google’s example and banned fake news sites from generating revenues from its ad networks. “Misleading, illegal and deceptive sites” from now on these fake news sites will fall under this category which is already used to block pages from using company’s Audience Network. This Audience Network it not only for the social network site but also for the mobile apps and websites.
Recently after the stunning upset of US election, many people accused the tech giant of swaying the election in a direction by allowing fake news to circulate throughout the social media site. 99% of the content which is shown on the Facebook is authentic argues Zuckerberg and strongly denies this accusation. Gizmodo report claims that company had a knowledge of fake news page problem and also had the tools to prevent it but didn’t use the tools because they thought it will block most conservative news from popping up on user news feeds. Facebook also denies this accusation.
As for this new development, a company spokesperson told The WSJ:
“While implied, we have updated the policy to explicitly clarify that this applies to fake news. We vigorously enforce our policies and take swift action against sites and apps that are found to be in violation. Our team will continue to closely vet all prospective publishers and monitor existing ones to ensure compliance.”
