When Elon Musk makes a grand statement, he usually backs it up with facts. Like when he said his company will introduce reusable spacecraft. So he has a reputation to deliver what he promises. But this streak might come to an end soon because his Solar Rooftops which were promised to be the same price as normal ones might not become a reality. Here is Musk’s Statement about SolarCity-
“I don’t want to commit 100 percent to this yet, but it’s looking quite promising that a solar roof will actually cost less than a normal roof before you even take the value of the electricity into account,” he said, on a recent investor’s call. “So, the basic proposition would be, ‘Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less, and by the way generates electricity?’ It’s like, why would you get anything else?”
Roofing pricing will vary massively depending on the size of the house, roof pitch, complexity of the job and any possible structural repairs. Location of your house also contributes to the cost because of transportation. A nice roof made of slate or tile can cost around $10,000 to $20,000 so Musk might not be way over his promise but you can be sure that they will not be as cheap as your regular asphalt tiles that you buy from a home depot.
