Data leaks from big organizations and industries are becoming more and more common and the latest victim of data dump is Professional Soccer/Football. The first batch of data dumps are published by German publication Der Spiegel and presumably more leaks will be released in a steady stream. These data leaks show the corruption in various European Football clubs and also the players. There are a staggering 1.9 terabytes of data, covering 18.6 million documents obtained by a group called “Football Leaks”. These leaks also detail secret agreements between clubs and players. This is the Snowden or DNC leak equivalent of professional football.
First leaks focus on stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Özil and mainly focuses on players taking advantage of tax laws and make huge amounts of money without paying any taxes. Tax evasion is common in football even for the greatest football player Lionel Messi was recently convicted for tax fraud. But by a massive amount of leaks getting release a lot more player might be coming into the limelight for the wrong reasons.
Beyond any of the in-depth details which will be revealed from all these documents, perhaps the most striking is the realization that the world we live in today it is hard to keep something a secret for too long. Also, the jobs of the ones who expose these documents is getting easier with improved net speeds and various forms of anonymity.
