Targeted ads can sometimes target the wrong people and become not only annoying but sometimes can be very insensitive. Like after recently losing a child, you seeing ads for children’s products will surely be traumatic. Facebook wants to change this situation. It started testing a feature which will allow you to block upsetting ads that can be insensitive. It currently can be used to block ads for alcohol and parenting products but Facebook has said that it might add more topics so you can block them more easily.
Part of a larger move
This change is a part of a larger change to ad preference that will make it easier to block undesirable ads. They’re both more visual and remain consistent whether you view them from your settings or the ad itself.
This feature is only in its test phase and its rollout for all the users will depend on this test’s success. But this is a very big shift for the social media giant. Until now facebook let you sideline the ads you didn’t want to see but with this feature you can completely wipe out the ads you don’t want to see.
It is a realization by Facebook that short-term ad money isn’t everything, It will not be right if you are shown some ad that is insensitive and makes you quit Facebook altogether.
