Online fake news is not harmless at all, sometimes things can escalate and can have dire consequences, It can even incite international incidents. A false story was released earlier which said that Israel was threatening to nuke Pakistan if it sent troops into Syria, Defense Minister Khawaja M. Asif saw this fake news and later warned Israel that his country could retaliate with nuclear weapons if necessary.
Though he later took a step back and said that Pakistan was peaceful and had nukes solely as a “deterrence to protect our freedom.” But he said this after Israel’s Ministry of Defense noted that the offending statement attributed to former Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon didn’t exist.
Most of this incident is muddled up because of Asif. One may think that a major political figure will be more skeptical about online news sources and verify the source before a respond rather than a threat to wipe out millions of people for real.
Out of this mess, we found out the importance of fighting fake news, it can be done by downplaying it, blocking it or starving it for ad money. Even if you are a major political figure you can make mistakes or get tricked by a fake news; reducing or fact-checking fake news can prevent these political incidents from happening in the future.
