New Year’s Day is not only to look back but also to move forward and make changes that will help others. France took an amazing step to help alleviate stress for many workers. France has enacted a law which will come in effect on January 1st that requires companies with over 50 employees to negotiate times when staff have the right to ignore email and other communications. If your company is eligible for the deal then the employer will not be able to punish the employee for not replying messages after the working hour. Even if the company is not eligible they have to cautious about the employee reply after the working hours.
This is not a revolutionary deal because many companies already has binding deals that prohibits the company to send messages after the worker day is finished. But some company may find it more hard to swallow. Especially the tech firms thinks that this may cause lose of productivity and make work hard for the employee who wants to work extra time. The internet runs 24/7 after all.
Nonetheless this is a very positive step towards the future for the employee. France started this trend but maybe more countries will soon follow.
