How much of an impact fake news on Facebook had in the US election this year is still up for debate but it prompted the social media giant to go on to crackdown mode against fake news. In the last couple of months, Facebook cut the funding for dubious fake posts and added a button that users can use to flag questionable content for review by third-party fact-checkers. To promote more legitimate and viral content, Facebook is now also tweaking its newsfeed algorithm.
Measures being taken
A blog post from facebook noted that “considered stories authentic when they were genuine and not misleading, sensational or spammy.” The new tweaks of individual news feeds will reflect the preference. It will not only bury fake news but also minimize the visibility of pages and stories which are click baits that urge users to share and subscribe. To teach the algorithm to kill fake non-authentic post, it identified several pages which beg for engagement and/or the page was manually hidden by the user. Then this activity was fed into a model which will detach low-quality content that is posted.
The new tweaks will also boost viral stories. Individual Page posts or topics across Facebook getting lots of engagement will be pushed higher in users’ personal News Feeds, at least temporarily.
