Valve is making video games again and it’s not Half-life 3, so get over it. Valve founder Gabe Newell confirmed during a media roundtable that, three titles are currently being developed and they are all full VR games. They are not like experiments either like The Lab which was a room-scale mini-game collection. These are real proper video games.
According to Eurogamer, he said, “When I say we’re building three games, we’re building three full games, not experiments,” Very few other details were disclosed like if the team was working on a new or existing IP.
As for the return to video game development, Newell did explain why. The HTC Vive is on the market now and Valve has to the opportunity to develop hardware and software components simultaneously. This will give Valve advantage over other developers.
Taking cues from Nintendo
Nintendo has this advantage and they are using it properly already. “This is something that Miyamoto has always had,” Gabe said. “He’s had the ability to think about what the input device is and design a system while de [he] designs games. Our sense is that this will actually allow us to build much better entertainment experiences for people.”
