It is a fact that the more you age your body slowly loses its capacity for producing blood. This the main reason for developing leukemia, immune deficiencies, and other blood-related conditions as you age. But scientists may have found the way to turn back the clock. They were able to rejuvenate blood by reprogramming the stem cells that create it.
By turning them into iPS cells, scientists were able to essentially “reset” the stem cells. So that they can generate any kind of cell. These cells act like new cells and they once again form blood stem cells.
This test is in its infancy at the moment. It was only tested in mice so far. If it is effective in human trials then the possibilities are endless. By rejuvenating enough blood cells your body could create an armor against blood-related disorders and also improve overall health as you age.
After all the tests even if the discovery of this technique is not successful, at least it showed how the blood circulatory system actually works. This research showed that age-related changes in the blood system are not due to any kind of mutation. Or else you’d still see the damage after the reset. Instead, it looks like epigenetics (changes in gene expressions) are responsible.
