Oppo introduced a new technique to reach a 5x optical zoom by a smartphone camera with their Periscope designed lens.
WHAT IS PERISCOPE DESIGN?
Most smartphones offer the single lens or dual lens feature, while the second lens can act like a portrait mode or depth of field mechanism to provide better image quality. With the periscope-style lens array system this sensor is placed horizontally and the lenses too. What it does is, it needs a prism to reflect the outside world into 45-degree angle directly to the sensor. The system seems like iPhone 7 Plus’s prime lens feature that blurs the background. But here this innovation shrinks the module size while it increases the degree of magnification.
The basic OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) always turns on the telephoto lens offset by 90-degree, focusing light onto the image sensor through the prism. The focal length of this system goes up by 3 times than the normal lenses – the result is lossless image quality even on 5x zoom. The module is just 5.7mm thick. That means it should be possible to enclose the camera hump without losing the image quality.
