After many years of controversial shootings by the police, many departments across the country at least pressured to wear body cams. Though the results are still mixed. Bodycam deployment was expected to increase accountability. But this expectation is hampered by a number of technical malfunctions and missing footage. As the officer forgot or was unable to start the body cameras. TASER the company that makes stun guns came up with a simple solution. They want to add a sensor which will automatically turn on when an officer draws his gun or the weapon leaves the holster.
The Signal Sidearm will only work with cameras within Axon brand of TASER’S. Triggering any within a 30-foot radius to start recording once a gun is drawn from a sensor-equipped holster automatically. In one way it is an amazing way to get synched simultaneous area coverage with footage from different angles. On the other hand, the camera will be activated automatically when the gun is drawn from the holster. So there will be footage of the escalation that made the weapon to be drawn.
So there could also be a secondary trigger like turning on a patrol car’s light or opening the car door. But the departments are still in power to establish their own body cam systems. So it is hard to say this system will ever see the day of light
