Ever-expanding ridesharing empire of Didi’s might be centered in China but to advance its goals they are willing to venture overseas. To advance its self-driving car ambitions Didi is opening an AI lab in self-driving car heaven California’s Mountain View. This step doesn’t mean that they are going to launch in the US. Rather it is to attract talent to further autonomous driving research. In this case, they may have scored a coup.
Uber’s Charlie Miller, best known for his remote control Jeep hack and plenty of Apple device hacks before that is hired by Didi. He will be the safety and security head for the self-driving cars. He is here to make sure that nobody can hack into your car. The Chinese company also scored some amazing engineers from Alphabet’s Waymo. Among them is Jia Zhaoyin who is appointed as principal engineer.
“Excited to announce I’m joining Didi Research America to lead the safety and security of their autonomous transportation systems.” – Charlie Miller
Didi’s interest for driverless cars was no secret but the establishment of the AI lab makes it official. Setting up an AI lab in the US is a sign of its dedication to the self-driving tech. It is also a very practical move on the companies part. Didi may have joined the party a little late but they will surely catch up real soon.
