Thanks to Maritime Launch Services, a private space corporation, Canada will finally have its own spaceport. On an isolated town on Nova Scotia’s eastern coast, is the location where the facility will be established. Maritime Launch Services plans to start building the facility next year. After assessing almost 14 locations the company decided to build it in this location.
This is the ideal location for a launch site. The town’s and surrounding areas’ low population density was great for safety. Also, the fact that rockets launching from the spaceport will fly over a large body of water.
The spaceport is the result of a commercial venture between a Ukrainian firm and Maritime Launch Services. This is not funded by the government at all. By 2020 MLS wants to host its first launch. By 2022 they expect the spaceport to host as many as eight launches per year.
It’s still unclear if Canada’s space agency and other private space companies can use it but the majority of the missions will involve Cyclone 4M rockets which are Ukrainian-built.
No need to travel to USA
If the Canadian Space Agency can use this launch pad then they don’t have to ship their rockets all the way to Virginia, USA launch pad. MLS is working on getting federal and provincial approval so it can break ground and start with the launch pads construction.
