Recently users have started to noticed that YouTube’s Restricted Mode filter consistently blocked videos containing LGBTQ+ related content thanks to a post by Rowan Ellis. YouTube tweeted that it filters mature content. However, many users tracked down selections like a Tegan & Sara video that was blocked despite being incredibly tame. “we must and will do a better job,” said YouTube Vice President Johanna Wright in a blog post tonight.
“This feature isn’t working the way it should. We’re sorry and we’re going to fix it.”, Admitted the executive of Youtube. They also claimed that Restricted Mode turns on for only 1.5 percent of traffic. “As a matter of principle, access to important content and different points of view should be allowed” Wright stated recently. A number of videos are already unblocked manually by Youtube where the system made “mistakes in understanding context and nuances,” but she also stated that to roll out more changes it will take some more time.
After Trump became President of US there has been much unease between the LGBTQ community, and this feeling didn’t come out of anywhere. There have already been some legislations that put pressure on the community and also Trump himself made some comments which are alarming. People who Trump chose for his cabinet mostly possess a conservative mentality. So blocking stuff from this community in social medias rings a lot of alarm bells.
