Any machine having the ability to understand human emotions is like planting a human soul inside it. Sounds creepy already? Then you must find out more about a New Zealand-based startup called “Soul Machines.”
This startup has recently crafted a virtual chatbot that is not only capable of interacting with humans but also have the ability to understand human emotions through observing facial expressions.
Ability to comprehend facial expressions
The constant effort to further humanize the interaction between us and the machines just took a step further by introducing Nadia the chatbot. Nadia can observe facial expressions of users through webcams. And the creators, Soul Machines have termed it “emotional intelligence” or EI, as this chatbot can connect emotionally with users.
Let Hutoma AI craft a personalized chatbot for you.
Nadia’s response will vary depending on the user’s emotion
Both AI and EI enable machines to upgrade themselves by constantly learning newer phenomena; as a result, the intensity of Nadia’s interaction with humans will allow it to better understand emotions. Changes in tone or facial expression will cause this chatbot to reply accordingly that best fits the state of emotion.
The idea generators
A professor at the University of Auckland named Mark Sagar is the brain behind Nadia’s concept. Furthermore, he has won academic awards for Avatar and King Kong for facial motion capturing tactics.
There is the extremely talented and beautiful Cate Blanchett who has given voice to Nadia. The main reason for building this is to provide better services for disabled people, funded by the Australian government.
Users can now access National Disability Insurance Schemes (NDIS) for more information easily without experiencing any complications involved by disabled users. Moreover, Soul Machines has already started working on multiple projects related to chatbots for other industries.
