Apple Inc. received permission to test autonomous vehicles in California. The permission came from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. From now on Apple can test its self-driving cars on public roads.
Apple’s mysterious car project
In fact, this news signals about mysterious car project. Internally Apple employees call the project as Titan. However, The Department of Motor Vehicles updated its list on Friday. Apple is 30th position in the list of manufacturers testing autonomous cars. Moreover, tech giant corporations like, Google, Tesla, and Ford are also on the list of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Additionally, Volkswagon Group of America was the first company to be on the list.
New York Times reports, “On Friday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles granted Apple an official test permit that the agency said would allow the company to test autonomous driving technology in three 2015 Lexus RX 450h luxury hybrid sport utility vehicles. The permit authorizes six people to take control of the vehicles if necessary”. According to regulations, every manufacturer should submit a yearly report. The report will summarize the disengagements of the technology during testing. In fact, California Department of Motor Vehicles also made it compulsory that during self-driving car test a human should be behind the wheel.
About the permission grant, Apple authority abstained from commenting. In fact, Apple was barely open about this project.
