If you want to order a new pair of glasses, usually it requires a trip to a doctor for a vision test first. However, this is going to be changed soon. Warby Parker, the American brand of prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses wants you to have your eye test at home before you order a new pair of glasses. Its Prescription Check app lets you check your eyes using your smartphone, saving you from driving to a doctor.
If you’re between 18 and 40, have an expired vision prescription, you’re suggested to download the app from the App Store. To use the app, you have to be a current Warby Parker customer. It requires you to have a comprehensive exam within the last five years with no history of eye disease. Also, this app won’t work for those who are using bifocal lenses. Besides, your prescription must have current lens strength (SPH) between 0 and -6.0 and an astigmatism value (CYL) between 0 and -2.0.
If you think you’re eligible, go to WarbyParker.com/Test and your computer will pair up with your mobile. Then you have to take a basic vision test by standing 12 feet away from the computer screen. Once the test is done, the app will send the result to your eye doctor. If the result is same as your previous one, you’ll get an updated prescription from your doctor, which you can use to order a new frame from Warby Parker. On the other hand, it will send you a referral to get a new exam at an optometrist. The whole process takes about 20 minutes and within 24 hours you’ll hear back on your results.
Since 2015, Warby parker has been working on this technology. This app may not replace your eye doctor for a comprehensive vision test if your vision has changed. However, it can reduce the hassle of taking an appointment of a doctor if you just want to grab a new frame based on your expired but still valid prescription.
