People were skeptical when Russia’s Yandex announced that they were working on self-driving cars. Because companies like Waymo and other American counterparts already has a year-long head start. It made up for lost time because of Yandex or specifically, its on-demand service Yandex.Taxi has unveiled a prototype self-driving car. The car which was a heavily modified Toyota Prius V is shock full of AI, that’s full set of sensors and “proprietary computing algorithms” that can help it navigate around traffic and tricky obstacles. It released a video which is not full mind blowing tech that’s the point they are making, they are showing to have a functioning machine.
Public test runs will be done by 2018 but now it limited to close circuits. It’s not shocking that Yandex would rush into the autonomous vehicle game. Russia is more than a little eager to reduce its dependence on foreign technology, and that’s bound to include self-driving cars. The question is whether or not Yandex can move quickly after this. This is also a signal that driverless cars are rapidly gathering support around the globe. Don’t be surprised if you’re hailing a robotic ride if you visit Moscow in the coming years.
So do you think this will be a success?
