Everyone has a dream of building their own house, but it takes time and money. What if your dream house could be built by itself in minutes? It may sound like something straight out of sci-fi movie, but a company has actually developed something like that. The UK based Ten Fold Engineering has developed a modular self-transforming home that builds itself from a truck-sized block under 10 minutes.
It’s all about lever
The key behind this cool new offering is no computer programming or AI, but a patented lever system. The lever system controls the entire counter balanced folding leakage and lets the home effectively “make itself”. All you have to do is push a button and watch it unfold. Once unfolded, you can secure the structure using an electric drill. The structure closes by being pulled in with a winch that comes with a fail-safe. And the best part is the unit will never close if the floors aren’t completely folded up. So, don’t worry, it’s not going to squeeze you.
Make your dream home anywhere you want
According to Ten Fold Engineering, their self-transforming home also comes with a room where you can store some furniture while it is compacted. Once unfolded, it becomes three times of its original transport size. The company says their base unit, named the U-box, becomes approximately 645 square feet when unfolded, with all its internal fittings and fixtures pre-installed.
As the structure can be unfolded anywhere, there’s no need for foundation. You don’t have to worry about the builders, construction materials, and vehicles. Just put it on a truck and go for your perfect destination. This transforming home could be a great option for mobile clinics, and refugee camps. Some schools can use it during their study tour. And if you’re one of them who don’t like to live in one place for a long time, this could be the best option for you.
The estimated cost of the units starts at about $130,000, which is quite reasonable comparing to traditional housing. Ten Fold Engineering’s technology is so versatile that a single truck-sized box could be used to construct this transforming home. Besides, the company is pretty generous that it is licensing out its patented technology to other contractors. It means local manufacturers can build such homes using the technology and you don’t have to depend on Ten Fold.
The company confirms that they’ve already completed their European standard production drawings and now are converting them into American building codes. You can expect one of your self-constructed homes by the end of 2018.
