There is no such thing as a Leica smartphone! Those words seem invalid now. Lei(Leitz) and Ca(Camera) combined to create Leica. Leica is a German company widely known for manufacturing optics and high-end cameras. Their chairman gave a hint about an upcoming storm in the smartphone camera zone.
“It gets a bit confidential, but you could think of this: Are two camera systems enough for a smartphone? And that could give you a hint into the future.”
Andreas Kaufmann, chairman of the supervisory board of Leica Camera, told CNBC‘s, Managing Asia.
Baby Steps toward Smartphone
Huawei is the first globally renowned smartphone company in China. Leica made a pact with Huawei to design the optical division. Huawei p10 got released in the first quarter of this year. The promotional features were mostly considered on the camera of the p10. The new Leica Dual Camera 2.0 uses precise 3D facial detection, dynamic illumination, and natural portrait enhancements to produce stunning artistic portrait shots in Leica image style.
During the partnership with Huawei Oliver Kaltner, present CEO stated: “Smartphones make a very important contribution to the world of photography and open an important door for Leica to new target groups and fields of application.”
A possible product of Leica seems to be a smartphone with only the red dot. Andreas Kaufmann also told CNBC “I am not sure whether the company can do (this) … (But) one dream would be my personal dream: a true Leica phone, Every smartphone is wrong for photography at the moment.”
He explained the orientation of smartphones in the market is not ideal for landscape or street photography.
“The phone nowadays is not fit really for photography … It’s used as a camera, it’s used as a video camera, but it’s not built that way and I think there’s a long way to go still.”
Tech consumers are now relying on their hand picked smartphones for capturing moments and are mostly satisfied with the results. Andreas Kaufmann’s vision seems to hunger for an update. RED the professional cinema camera makers are also releasing their weapon in the arena. Major camera makers like Leica or RED are now on the same platform of Samsung and Apple. The upcoming war of phone photography seems more interesting than past years.
