The modernized version of Virginia-class submarines will be equipped with them and stocking has already begun by the US Navy. This will start with the USS Colorado that’s expected to be commissioned in November. The pericope of this high-tech submarine will be maneuvered using the Xbox controller by its sailors. Unlike periscopes in movies, wherein a single person has to peer through an eyepiece, the high-tech version of the instrument uses high-resolution cameras and displays images on big screens.
Necessity is the mother of invention
This cool solution came out of a rather expensive problem. The joystick and the control panel Lockheed Martin developed to steer it cost around $38,000. Plus, the joystick was heavy and clunky, and it takes hours to train a sailor to use it.
When the military contractor tested the Xbox controller as a replacement, sailors were able to figure out controls on their own within a few minutes. Compared to the complicated and sluggish $38,000 dollar this controller will cost the Navy only $30 dollar so the winner was easy to select.
