Don’t be surprised if you find a lot of local news popping up in your Facebook News Feed. The social media giant just announced that it will start prioritizing news from your local publishers, means news from a local publisher that you follow or something your friend shares will be bumped higher in your feed.
“People consistently tell us they want to see more local news on Facebook,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post. “Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives.”
Facebook took this step as part of its value towards high-quality news. “These efforts to prioritize quality news in News Feed, including this local initiative, are a direct result of the ongoing collaboration with partners,” said Facebook.
Well, this isn’t the social media giant’s only steps towards local news. There’s also a section under testing named “Today In,” which will bring together local news, events, as well as emergency updates. However, if you’re currently living outside the US, you will have to wait a bit to experience this prioritization. Right now, this local news prioritization is only kicking off in the US, but the company says it has plans to expand worldwide this year.
