Google’s augmented reality project ARCore is helpful for making augmented reality widely available to Android users but there is a big problem: Play Store needs to be updated regularly which is a problem in countries like China, where Google’s services are either unavailable or blocked. So Google found a way around it, They are making ARCore available in China through the Xiaomi App Store. Mi Mix 2S smartphone needs to be used to get the advantage of AR features but its far better to have a way than sitting on the sidelines while the rest of the world uses immersive apps. Google also teased that more ARCore partners are coming soon.
This kind of steps is not new for Google. When they wanted to introduce Android Wear to China, it initially teamed up with Mobvoi to make the platform available. If Google didn’t make the technology available in China, it risked ceding control of key technology to either third-party Android developers or direct competitors like Apple, so the motivation is clear. No matter how successful ARCore becomes in the country, Google will have a presence in the market.
